About Jane
Jane makes vibrant paintings and prints of the natural world. She is as likely to paint pebbles and stone circles as she is animals, birds and plants.
Jane uses careful drawing and lively colours to express the truth and beauty that only nature can reveal.
Jane was born in 1963 in Stratford on Avon and travelled widely before coming to study and settle in Oxford. She obtained her degree in 1988 in Fine Art and Art History, working mostly in drawing, printmaking, bookworks and paperworks, but never in paint. She began painting in April 1996 and is self-taught.
She is fascinated with the natural world, natural phenomenon, history, mythology, religion and science. In selecting subject matter, she is drawn to living things, landscapes, ancient monuments and different cultures from around the world. Jane is a card-carrying atheist and considers natural phenomena from a rational, scientific point-of-view.
"Love and respect are the only things that really matter. In my paintings I try to express something about shared humanity - the hopes, fears, loves and aspirations that from whatever time and place, make us all the same."
Her artistic influences include van Gogh, who she has studied in depth, Hockney, Matisse, and the Dutch and Flemish old masters. Elements from diverse cultures, including Native American, Egyptian, African, pre-Roman European, Tribal and many more frequently creep in to her work.
Jane is a seasoned and obsessive traveller, and her travels around the globe frequently inspire many of her works. But there is plenty of inspiration at home in rural Oxfordshire, too...
Jane is a communications manager for a women's charity in Oxford, England. She has also been a horseback cattle-musterer, waitress, petrol station attendant, international student advisor, IT marketing manager and life drawing teacher.
Jane is married to editor and photographer Moth Clark and has a daughter, a son, a step-son and a stripey cat called Seafer.
