van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is the artist who has had most influence on me.
I was first introduced to Vincent van Gogh by a friend while on a school trip to the National Gallery in London as a 17-year-old. I knew the London Sunflowers from its endless reproductions on tacky souvenirs, but nothing prepared me for the impact of seeing the canvas up close. How could anything be so yellow?! I was smitten and needed to see more and to understand where this extraordinary vision came from.
Since then, I have visited most van Gogh sites including Arles, Paris, St Remy-de-Provence, Les Stes-Maries-sur-Mer, Amsterdam, Nuenen, Auvers-sur-Oise and Zundert, in some cases many times, to deepen my understanding of his life and works. Equipped with my paintbox, I have painted the motifs Vincent did from precisely the same points.
